Country Fair – Factoid Number 6!

Did you know?

Legendary Battles

For a good number of years the fair has hosted a grand tournament, a display of toughness and tactics, daring-do and great rivalry — the Tug ‘o’ War. The rules are simple; round up your team (often from the bar where they are toning up), put on your boots (some specially adapted with steel heels and tractor tyre treads) and on the word “pull” do just that!

Teams include locals, children and visitors (one team comes on holiday annually to compete). The Bosue Vineyard Cup is the main trophy held many a time by Probus Young Farmers – a mighty force of young men but stolen in 2014 by the St Ewe team and proudly displayed in the Crown Inn. Will they be able to retain it in 2016? The challenge is set.

Did you know?

2012, The year of the Wasp

An unusual job for the fair organizers is scouring the hedgerows around the show field to ensure we are clear of wasp nests and they don’t usually present a real problem.

However, in 2012 the black and yellow perils were out in force. Rumour has it they travelled from all over Cornwall to sample our famous cream teas and judge the horticultural exhibits. Sue, our first aider was kept busy treating a few visitors who had close encounters of the stripy kind. A group of wozzers were last seen heading back to Bugle with 2 ham sandwiches, a jam scone and a pint of Betty Stoggs.

Did you know?

Danny, Champion of the World

We have a great number of sideshow games at the fair for children and family to join in. Plate smashing with the Cubs, bowling, welly throwing, a real coconut shoe, to mention a few. Gorran School Parents Association have assisted for many years.

Beat the Goalie is a firm favourite and for the last two shows the courageous Danny has faced the young aces of the football field. Despite their best efforts he has yet to be beaten overall, having saved more goals than he’s let in. And remember he stays in goal for the whole event! A 6 hour stint, with a penalty every 2 minutes means saving 180 goals – what a man. Will you be able to beat him this year?

Did you know?

It is 21 years since the St Ewe Country Fair was first held!

From a small event it has now grown into a really busy show, easily providing a great family day out. Our last fair in 2014 attracted well over 1000 adults plus youngsters, not to mention those involved. It’s likely that the show has seen over 30,000 visitors in its time so far.
