Country Fair – Factoid Number 18!

St Ewe Country Fair – 21st August 2016

Factoid Number 18

Did you know?

There will be ferrets at the fair?

We will not be recommending you have a go at ‘ferret legging’, the stunt thought to have been popular amongst Yorkshire miners in the 70’s. This involves tying the legs of your trousers at the ankles and seeing how long you can keep two ferrets inside. The world record is said to be 5 hours and 30 minutes, nothing is said of the condition of the record holder at the end of this period! Legging probably originated when hunting was only allowed amongst the wealthy and rabbit poachers had to hide their illicit ferrets in their clothing.

Ferrets are a domesticated form of the European polecat and the name ferret is derived from the Latin furittus, meaning “little thief” a reference to their penchant for secreting away small items.

However, we do recommend you have a go at the ferret racing which will take place as these inquisitive creatures have fun darting through their tunnels.
